YSP Science Colloquium Seminar - Science Journalism as a Way to Improve Scientific Literacy

On October 5th, YSP and the Future Educators hosted a seminar given by Dr. Alan Newman entitled "Science Journalism as a Way to Improve Scientific Literacy". Dr. Newman holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania and is currently a research professor in the College of Education at University of Missouri - St. Louis. He has also conducted research at Brookhaven National Laboratory and University of Illinois. About 20 years ago, he changed careers, moving into science journalism. Most of that career—18 years—was spent with the American Chemical Society in Washington, DC, where he worked as a science writer and managing editor for the news sections of Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Science & Technology. Four years ago, he came to St. Louis to join his wife, who is on the faculty of UMSL. In 2008, he made yet another career change and became a co-PI on a four-year, NSF education grant to explore whether training students to become science journalists will improve their science literacy.
